Earl's Work to Restore Issac Wilson's MarkerIsaac Wilson was among the first half-dozen residents of Indianapolis. Because he was a Rev. War soldier his burial site was of interest to me. Memeorial Day has almost always been a day for me to put flags on Rev. War Soldier's grave markers. For several decades there had been a sign at the corner of W. Michigan and Barnhill Dr. with an arrow pointing North stating that a marker for Wilson was just North of there. The cemetery had been destroyed since about 1962 and this was a replacement marker attached to a rock. While doing additional study, I found the information on the former cemetery and another marker in the State rotunda of our capitol building. It was during this research that a kind librarian introduced me to Thelma Murphy.
Several years later, while driving past the roadside direction marker I noticed it was gone. A trip up Barnhill verified that Wilson's marker was also removed. A new building was going up. After a quick visit with the construction supervisor I was assured that the markers were secured in a campus basement and would be replaced.
After the construction was completed they lost the markers and I fought the next few years to get the one on the rock replaced which they did a couple of years ago.
I'm now planning a uniformed re-dedication.
The new marker was in place before Thelma died.
