Spud The Rescue Dog

I think he (Spud) only did one parade with me and it was as a rider in a small colonial wagon. The parade was in Evansville and I had to keep a muzzle on him in case someone tried to pet him.

He was a rescue dog. He had been fired from his job as a nursing home entertainer and was being sent to Danville to be gassed. I think he had bitten a male patient. They told me his name was Spud.

Spud hated me from day one. He only liked women, at least we had that in common. It took almost a year before he would let me pet him.

One afternoon I was putting on my colonial uniform and decided to include my white colonial wig. Spud jumped up right next to me and sat close to me. With the wig on he thought I was an old woman.

Whenever I would take him out for a walk I would put on my wig.

The pearls and the heals were just to entertain my neighbors.

I was at a humane society tent for a dog show and Gary Varvel was making drawings for a donation to the Humane Society. This is a drawing that Star artist Gary Varvel did of Spud when I described his behavior.
The colored Varvel was done with crayons by a very young lady while visiting my office. I told her to sign it.

This photo picture of Spud was not with me when I modeled Spud to Varvel.

What has happened is I scolded Spud and pointed at the floor. I'd point at him and say "did you do that?". He would look very sad and sometimes laydown. As I would turn to leave he would bare his teeth at my departing rear. Are those BIG teeth or what?

Spud always enjoyed biking on Cinco De Mayo
